Goal Line or edge of Penalty Area

Post by Whistleblower on Mon Mar 24, 2008 1:56 pm

When on your own with Club Assistants should you go to the goal line or stay on the edge. If you adopt the latter policy you will see pushes easier and also ready for quick breaks. If you go on the goal line you will be in that position for the 1 or 2 times when you will need to be there during the season. Views?

As the old saying goes, "variety is the spice of life" so i would advocate (FWIW) that on some occasions the goal line on others the edge of the area. I think it will also depend on other factors, such as the stage of the game and maybe even what's at stake.

just my tuppence worth.....

I personally think you play percentages, how many times do you have a ball over the goal-line situation compared to everything else that can happen in the penalty area.

Advice i was given is to vary positions and keep on the move while talking to players,'arms to yourselves', 'nothing silly',players are wary cos they dont know exactly where you are and what you can/can't see.

Varying your position is certainly good advice. If you always stand in the same position for free-kicks, corners etc. it doesn't take long for the sneaky players to realise that they can get up to various little tricks/cheats which you are not in a position to see. Not only does that mean they get away with cheating it will also lead to an increase of dissent thrteatening your match control.
